Staff Enjoying Pavones Waterfall

Sometimes we all need a break...even when we live in Costa Rica. Recently a small group from Osa Property Management (and an architect that is working with us on a project) visited and enjoying Pavones waterfall.

This increasingly poorly kept "secret waterfall" is a wonderful place, especially during the warm season, to cool off from the hotenjoying pavones waterfall and humid weather. The pool is crisp and clean and invigorating!! The safest time of year to go swimming in the water is typically during February and March - towards the end of the dry season before the heavy rains start to fall - which fills up the creek.

"The Rock" is a naturally occurring phenomenon, and has been there for as long as anyone can remember. When enjoying Pavones waterfall, all you will need is a pair of sandals, or footwear, that you don't mind getting wet.

Arriving at the Pavones Waterfall is quite simple. Head east from the Costanera Highway, just north of Punta Mala, and follow the gravel road for approximately 5 km (3 miles). The only real landmark between the Pavones waterfall and the Costanera Highway is the first (of two) tilapia restaurants on the road.

Most of the time was spent swimming, relaxing, skipping rocks and talking.

Osa Property Management is happy to announce that we recently launched our YouTube channel. We are busy building up our video library and will be soon adding new videos every couple of weeks.

According to Nick Halverson, Osa Property Management's CEO, "We want to not only use beautiful photos and great written youtube logo newdescriptions of the Osa region on our website and other marketing materials, but we also want to show visitors and locals alike, the amazing resources, homes and activities, beaches and restaurants, in and around San Isidro del General, Dominical, Uvita, Ojochal, San Buenas and Palmar Norte. By no means are we professional videoographers, but our simple and raw videos will show what it is really like to live here in Costa Rica. We can't wait to build up our library of videos!"

In addition, Abigail Vargas added, "In today's world of seemingly decreasing attention spans, we will be providing videos with three minutes at most. The only time we plan on showing a longer video is if it involves an interview - of which we have several great interviews planned and scheduled."

We love Instagram as a primary way to share the beauty of all Costa Rica has to offer. There are days we may publish five or more photos, depending on what catches our collective eyes or what our clients are sharing with us.

You may have also noticed that we have included an Instagram feed on the right side of our website. We added that especially for those who don't currently have an Instagram account and for those that do have one, it provides a great way to see the type of images we share.

We try to keep our Facebook posts to no more than five per week as we don't want to inundate anyone's Facebook account with 'too much' information.  However, be sure to Like us on Facebook also for up-to-date news and information about the Osa region of Costa Rica.

All of our photos in Instagram were taken by our staff, our guests or provided to us by others to use with their permission. We can show you exactly where the photos were taken if you want to take a tour. Simply pick out the photos you like, and we will line up a tour to see them.

Daily Flights from San Jose to San Isidro del General Perez Zeledon

When looking to visit the Osa region of Costa Rica, a visitor or traveler must balance how long it will take to get to the area versus how much time they have in the country. We encourage our visitors to fly from San Jose's Juan Santamaria airport (SJO) to one of the local airports in the Osa region. There are not a lot of options to choose from when flying from San Jose to San Isidro del General, in fact, there is only one. Additionally, there are several locations to choose from including:

  • Quepos
  • San Isidro del General/Perez Zeledon
  • Palmar Sur
  • Golfito
  • Puerto Jimenez

Sansa Airlines is the only local airline that offers daily flights into San Isidro del General. Below is Sansa's schedule:

San Isidro is a great location to start your trip in Costa Rica. It's large population, variety of stores (even a movie theater) and its proximity to other cities, make it a great place to get your trip ready.

San Isidro is within 30 minutes of:

  • Town of Dominical
  • Reptilandia attraction
  • Nauyaca Waterfalls

For home owners in the Bahia Ballena area of Costa Rica (southern pacific zone), it is a constant challenge to keep ahead of the yard and landscaping. I'm originally from the Midwest, United States, where grass grows for half the year, and the other half it is covered in snow. Here in Bahia Ballena, in the wonderful and beautiful tropical rainforest region, plants, grasses and ornamentals grow 365 days a year. The size of a lot is an important consideration when purchasing a lot in this area. The normal thinking is typically that "bigger is better" when it comes to purchasing a home lot. However, please keep in mind that some trees and plants will grow over two feet a month here in Costa Rica!!

Most Worthless Question when Building a Home in Costa Rica

Building a home in Costa Rica can be a daunting task that many ex-patriots are intimidated to do. There are, indeed, many steps that need to take place once the decision is made to build a home in the Bahia Ballena area (or any area).

The number one question that is asked in Costa Rica, is entirely worthless in my opinion.

The most worthless question..."How much per square foot (or per square meter) will it cost?"

In reality, no respectable builder should be able to tell you that, without first qualifying what is included. Questions that must be addressed before a per square foot number can be given include:

  • What type of building material is used? Block? Pre-fab? Treated lumber?
  • Where is the lot located? Is it easily accessible? Will the builders arrive and leave daily (closer to larger towns) or will they need to build a temporary shelter?
  • Does the lot already have electricity?
  • Does the lot already have LEGAL water? (more on that later)
  • What kind of finishes do you want? Granite counters? Marble floors? Cedar doors?
  • Do you want air conditioning? Ceiling fans?
  • What is your timeframe? Do you want to build right away or are you willing to wait?

For years the magic number that many of us heard was $50 per square foot. It sounded impossible...and it was. It is possible to build walls for $50 per square foot using block. However, what we came to discover was that many local builders will quote a price, but the price does NOT include any cabinetry or counter tops, electricity outlets, interior doors, toilets, light switches, etc. Once all of those were included, most builders quickly increased their bid up to the $70s/$80s per square foot range.

Again, keep in mind, that there can be a wide range of legitimate costs based on availability of the desired product. If you have a long horizon to build, then it provides more opportunities to take advantage of hardware store sales and other cost saving measures.

When building a home in Costa Rica make sure the quoted cost of the home includes costs and designs for closets, cabinets and other finishes...or have us facilitate the work for you.

  • However, many cost saving measures must be completed by you, the consumer.
  • Are you going to carry items from your home country into Costa Rica?
  • Are you going to take the time to price shop every item? What is that time worth to you?

I have met several retirees who love to hunt for "the deal", have the skills to do a lot of the work themselves, and have the time to do it. Others simply want the easiest method to get their dream home built.

These decisions are entirely up to you! When building a home in Costa Rica there are many things to think about - we've done it numerous times, let us help you.
